Your Guide to Looking and Feeling Confident on Camera

Tips for Professional Headshots

Whether you’re updating your LinkedIn, refreshing your company website, or launching a new business, your headshot is often the first impression people have of you. A great image captures not just your face, but your confidence, personality, and professionalism. Here’s how to prepare so your session goes smoothly and you love your results.

With MazPix Photography by Mazter Mindz Media, we can do professional headshots on a backdrop (typically grey like the one you see above) with studio lighting or we can arrange a more lifestyle sort of session in your office or outdoors. Either way, here are some tips as you plan for your headshots.

Plan Ahead — Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

The best headshots start with preparation. Schedule your session when you’re well-rested and not rushed. Avoid booking right after a stressful day or intense workout — you’ll look more relaxed and refreshed if you give yourself time.

Pro tip: If you’re getting a haircut or color, do it about a week before your shoot so it looks natural.

Choose Outfits That Reflect Your Brand

Your wardrobe sets the tone. Think about the message you want your photo to send.

  • Corporate / Professional: Solid colors, tailored fits, minimal patterns.
  • Creative / Entrepreneurial: Layers, texture, pops of brand color.
  • Lifestyle / Friendly: Soft tones, approachable fabrics, casual polish.

Stick to colors that flatter your skin tone, and avoid overly bright neon or busy patterns that distract.

Pay Attention to Grooming and Details

Small details make a big difference in high-resolution photos.

  • Hair: Bring a brush or comb, and touch up flyaways as needed.
  • Makeup: Keep it natural and matte — you want to look like you on your best day.
  • Men: Shave or trim facial hair neatly; moisturize to avoid shine.
  • Clothing: Iron or steam ahead of time; lint roll darker fabrics.

Think About Your Brand and Purpose

Where will these images live? Common places include:

  • Linked in profile
  • website
  • social media
  • marketing materials
  • business cards

Consider how they’ll be used together. Consistency builds trust.

Practice Expressions Beforehand

It’s totally normal to feel nervous in front of a camera. Try practicing in the mirror:

  • A soft smile for approachability.
  • A confident expression for leadership.
  • A genuine laugh for personality.

During your session, I’ll help guide you through posing, angles, and expression.

Bring the Essentials

To stay comfortable and camera-ready, pack a small kit:

  • Lip balm or gloss
  • Hairbrush
  • Blotting papers or powder
